First Sign of Spring
First Sign of Spring
Spring arrives on Friday. For us it was last week when the grackles arrived at our feeder. Every spring the grackles, starlings, cowbirds and redwing blackbirds spend a couple of weeks crowding out the locals at the feeders - the cardinals, chickadees, titmice, mourning doves, carolina wrens, sparrows, nuthatches, downy and red-bellied woodpeckers and even blue jays - before they continue on their migration north.

The grackles arrived today on Long Island and are decimating our seed and suet feeders. Even the squirrels are put off! Male goldfinches are still shrugging off their winter coats, but I get glimpses of bright yellow every now and then.
ReplyDeleteHi Chris
ReplyDeleteWell then it must be Spring on Long Island too! As you can only imagine, Mark, being a very heavy "feeder" somehow manages to get out enough seed that the squirrels get more than a share!!!! We may be wondering where Spring went by tomorrow morning---we may have snow, or so they say!
